Six Months On: How Make with Notion Has Shaped Sequel

Six months ago, Sequel’s Managing Director, Pip, and our Client Success and Ops Manager, Megan, packed their bags and headed to San Francisco for the Make with Notion 2024 conference. It was an incredible opportunity to see firsthand what Notion had in store for the future, connect with other digital innovators, and get early access to some of their most exciting upcoming features. Now, half a year later, we’re reflecting on what we’ve implemented, what’s changed for us, and what’s still on our 2025 bingo card.

The Game-Changers We’ve Adopted

Over the last few months we’ve embraced some of Notion’s most powerful new features—ones that have genuinely changed how we operate day-to-day. From the long-awaited launch of Forms, to smarter Layouts and a deeper understanding of Automations, these updates have helped us streamline internal processes, better support our clients, and unlock new ways of working!

Alternative Page Layouts: Enhancing Client Dashboards

One of the biggest improvements we’ve integrated is Notion’s alternative page layouts. These have been invaluable in refining our client dashboards, offering a more structured and visually intuitive way to manage projects. Now, instead of relying on the traditional Notion layout, we can create cleaner, more engaging views that help clients easily access project updates, key documents, and next steps.

Forms: A Simple Yet Powerful Addition

Notion’s new forms have also been a standout feature, allowing us to streamline data collection both internally and externally. Here’s how we’ve been using them:

  • Client Dashboards: We’ve embedded forms directly into client workspaces for new project requests and project feedback, reducing back-and-forth emails and making it easier to keep everything in one place.
  • Event Lead Capture: At a recent show we exhibited at, we used Notion forms to run a web audit sign-up and a digital notepad giveaway competition, capturing leads in real time and integrating them seamlessly into our workflow.
  • New Product Early Access: As we prepare to launch a new product, we’ve even added a Notion form to our landing page, making it simple for interested users to sign up for early access. The built-in database functionality allows us to track responses effortlessly, giving us a clear view of interested users.

Building Notion Into a Central Hub

Beyond these new features, we’ve also been deeply focused on integrating our other systems—including project management, accounts, and reporting tools—into Notion. Our goal has been to use Notion as a central source of truth, reducing information silos and ensuring everything we need is easily accessible in one place. One of the things we love most about Notion is its flexibility—it allows us to pull in data from external sources and present it in a clear, structured way that gives us a much better bird’s-eye view of our operations.

Learning from the Best: Structuring Our Internal Spaces

One of the standout talks from the conference was given by Andrew Mason, CEO of Descript, who shared insights on building your dream setup in Notion. His session gave us a fresh perspective on how we structure everything internally. As a result, we’ve:

  • Created clearer team spaces that act as a safe space for individual teams to share ideas, documents, and resources.
  • Refined our central team space, making it the perfect welcome hub for new starters—supporting them through onboarding and beyond.

These changes have made a huge difference in ensuring our teams are more connected, aligned, and empowered to work efficiently.

What’s Next?

While we’ve embraced these features, there’s still so much more we want to explore. Notion’s new email feature—granted early to attendees—was an exciting prospect that we are still in the process of discovering. This email feature is high on our priority list for 2025, particularly in how it could improve communication within Notion workspaces. With our focus on efficiency and automation, we see huge potential in integrating Notion's email functionality more deeply into our client interactions and internal workflows.

Attending Make with Notion was an eye-opener, and six months on, we’re still feeling the impact of the innovations we saw there. Notion continues to be an integral part of how we manage projects and clients at Sequel, and with each new feature, we find ways to refine and enhance our processes even further.

Here’s to another six months of discovery, experimentation, and unlocking the power of Notion!
