From Young Visionary to Digital Development Leader

As World Entrepreneurs Day approaches on the 21st of August, it’s a fitting time to spotlight the journey of Sequel’s Technical Director and Founder, Ollie. Starting a business at any age is a challenge, but launching a digital development agency at just 21 is a whole other level of ambition. Today, Sequel stands as a testament to Ollie’s vision, drive, and passion for the industry. So let’s delve into his entrepreneurial journey, sharing insights and lessons that could inspire the next generation of tech leaders.

The Early Sparks of Ambition

Ollie’s entrepreneurial spirit was ignited early on. “Ever since I started working at 16, I just knew I wanted to run my own agency. I love the busyness of an agency and the challenge of spinning lots of plates,” he reflects. But the path wasn’t always clear. He recalls his secondary school years where IT caught his interest, though he wasn’t entirely sure where it would lead. A work experience stint at a design agency in 2010 set the course in motion. “I loved it! I was offered a job for when I left school, and that’s where it all began.”

Despite his growing passion, not everyone was convinced. “My parents had concerns I was too young to start my own business and that people wouldn’t take me seriously but fully supported me in my ambitions,” he recalls. But Ollie’s determination never wavered. By utilising his contacts from previous agency roles, he built up a client base that trusted him despite his age—a key factor in the early success of Sequel.

Founding Sequel: A Vision Realised

When Ollie founded Sequel in December 2016 (previously known as Bullet Digital), his vision was clear: to build something big, something lasting. “It was never a ‘see how you go’ thing. I always had a vision that it would be something big, long-term,” Ollie explains. The early days were intense, juggling client work, business admin, and the pressure of being a one-man band. “The biggest challenge was that everyone wanted everything at the same time, and I didn’t want to let anyone down.”

However, the challenges didn’t deter him. Ollie’s dedication paid off as Sequel began to grow, and soon, he wasn’t alone. Pip, one of the first to join the team, helped manage the increasing admin workload, marking the start of Sequel’s expansion. Four short months later, Harry joined as a Junior Developer, further strengthening the team. “It was great to have others to share the workload with, but more so, to have company and share the wins with,” he says fondly.

Growth and Learning

The growth of Sequel has been nothing short of remarkable. Ollie attributes this success to a combination of factors: “Being good at what we do helps with repeat work and keeping busy. We’ve come to a point where we’ve found the right people. It’s a team I’m really proud of.” For Ollie, maintaining a high standard of work amidst rapid growth is about finding the right processes and ensuring everyone is aligned with Sequel’s values.

One of the standout projects for Ollie was the launch of the THX Live Hire portal. “It was the first big project I launched single-handedly, so that’s a major one for me,” he shares. This project not only brought recognition to Sequel but also opened doors to new opportunities in the industry.

Of course, the journey hasn’t been without its lessons. A tough lesson in credit checks taught Ollie the importance of being business-savvy, while learning to delegate was crucial for Sequel’s continued growth. “Initially, the business was my baby, and it was hard to let go of some elements. But I’ve learned that delegation is key to focusing on my role in the business.”

Leadership and Looking Forward

Ollie’s leadership philosophy is rooted in patience, flexibility, and understanding. He believes in fostering a positive work environment where team members feel valued and motivated. “We have regular team days out, lunches, and offering flexible working hours all contribute to a work culture that people are excited to be part of,” Ollie notes.

Having been with Sequel for the past five years, I’ve had the privilege of watching Ollie transform his vision into a thriving reality. His drive and innovative mindset have not only shaped the company but have also inspired everyone around him, including myself. It’s been an incredible journey so far, and I’m excited to see where his passion and leadership will take us next.

Pip, Managing Director

As for the future, Ollie’s vision remains ambitious. In the short term, he’s focused on industry networking and nurturing his team. Long-term, he envisions Sequel expanding its knowledge across varying industries and growing both in size and expertise.

For young entrepreneurs looking to follow in his footsteps, Ollie offers this advice: “Trust your gut, trust your skills, and know what you’re good at. Don’t try to take everything on; sometimes it’s better to say no.”

A Word to Aspiring Talent

Ollie’s journey is an inspiring one, not just for what he’s achieved but for how he’s achieved it—with humility, hard work, and a relentless focus on quality. As Sequel continues to grow, we’re always open to hearing from young professionals eager to kick-start their careers in the tech industry. Whether you’re looking for work experience or a long-term opportunity, don’t hesitate to reach out. Supporting the growth of new talent is something that the Sequel team are incredibly passionate about.

This commitment to nurturing young talent is reflected in our sponsorship of the Young Apprentice of the Year at the Hire Awards of Excellence this past April. Ollie, having started his own journey at a young age, understands the challenges and opportunities that come with it. For him, it was crucial to give back and support those who are in the same shoes he once was—starting young, navigating their industry, and needing a strong support system to thrive. At Sequel, we believe in the importance of cheering on the next generation, working with mentors who can guide and nurture emerging talent, ensuring they have the tools and encouragement they need to succeed.
